Someone I\u2019ve never met who is now working for my ex-boss has an Important Document that needs to be translated, it\u2019s grippingly interesting, really, there\u2019s just this one thing\u2026 it\u2019s a tome with an undisclosed number of pages (I am in possession of \u201cchapter 2\u201d which is already 28 pages long) and needs to be done by next Friday.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhat about M.?\u201d<\/em> I ask. (M. is the staff person who usually handles this kind of thing.)<br \/>\n<em>\u201cHe\u2019s on vacation.\u201d <\/em><br \/>\nHow convenient for him.<br \/>\n<em>\u201cIs there anyone else you can call to help?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ll spare you the details (you have my son Brendan to thank for that. I wrote down all the details, including the part where it went from a one-week to a one-day deadline, but when I asked him what he thought he said, \u201cMom, I don\u2019t think you should put that on your blog.\u201d I still have a lot to learn about blogging.) Suffice it to say I just spent the better part of the day doing a job that I should never have accepted, and extricating myself from continuing it well into next week.<\/p>\n<p>Why don\u2019t I listen to my inner gatekeeper when she screams \u201cNO! You have other much more fun stuff to do!!\u201d ? Other people can say \u201cLook, this is your mess, not mine. No thanks.\u201d All I manage to say is, \u201cIsn\u2019t there anyone else you can call?\u201d I have an exciting article to write about the Deep Horizon oil spill. And in the story I&#8217;m writing, I&#8217;m just at the part where the woman is about to tell her husband that she\u2019ll have to have an eye operation. All this took the backseat so I could play linguistic roto-rooter? What, am I crazy?<\/p>\n<p>I should do a better job of channeling Nancy Reagan.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of drugs, just last night during dinner we were listening to Hotel California.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWhatever happened to the Eagles?\u201d<\/em> I ask.<br \/>\nBrendan tells me the band still exists, but isn\u2019t any good any more.<br \/>\n<em>\u201cThey probably did too many drugs,\u201d<\/em> I say.<br \/>\n<em>\u201cThat\u2019s what Hotel California\u2019s about, I think,\u201d<\/em> says Brendan.<br \/>\n<em>\u201cAll rock bands do too many drugs,\u201d<\/em> says Luc, definitively. I wonder how he knew that. <em>\u201cThat\u2019s why I\u2019m not going to join a rock band.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Phew. Check that one off the list.<\/p>\n<p><a style=\"clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;\" href=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-7zhBP6N_TKU\/TXFc-TrtrJI\/AAAAAAAAAg0\/wAmeRyJnRzY\/s1600\/IMG_2488.JPG\"><img loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/lh4.googleusercontent.com\/-7zhBP6N_TKU\/TXFc-TrtrJI\/AAAAAAAAAg0\/wAmeRyJnRzY\/s320\/IMG_2488.JPG\" alt=\"\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\" border=\"0\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I had a pleasant surprise while grocery shopping the other day. This potato. How long had it been sitting there and no one else snapped it up? I felt warm and fuzzy all the way to the checkout. I don\u2019t buy potatoes very often, but I was planning to make carrot soup that day. The last time I made carrot soup, it looked vaguely puke-like. I was thinking that adding a potato or two would help with the smoothness factor. (I forgot to add the potato, of course, when I made the soup. But it turned out fine this time.)<\/p>\n<p>I love life\u2019s little surprises. Carrot soup that is smooth and tastes delicious.
